Parental Care System and Brood Size Drive Sex Difference in Reproductive Allocation: An Experimental Study on Burying Beetles

چکیده

Life-history theory predicts that increased resource allocation in current reproduction comes at the cost of survival and future reproductive fitness. In taxa with biparental care, each parent can adjust investment on according to changes their partner’s effort, but these adjustments may be different for males females as they have strategies. Numerous theoretical empirical studies proposed mechanism underlying such adjustments. addition, value brood or litter (brood size) has also been suggested affect amount care through manipulation size. While two conditions studied independently, impact interplay potential sex-dependent performance remains largely unknown. this study, we simultaneously manipulated both system (removal either vs. no removal) size a burying beetle ( Nicrophorus vespilloides ) understand joint effect trade-off between reproduction. Our results show compensated mate loss by significantly increasing level regardless size, while exhibited compensation only small Additionally, an increase reproduction, showed decreased parental during subsequent breeding event pair. These findings imply dual influence Moreover, differences (parental larvae number, average larval mass dispersal) is demonstrated. enhance understanding sex roles highlight importance drivers allocation.

Parental care improves offspring survival and growth in burying beetles

Burying beetles (genus Nicrophorus) provide elaborate parental care to their offspring. Parental beetles defend a small vertebrate carcass, which constitutes the sole food source for the larvae. They also manipulate the carcass in various ways and directly regurgitate pre-digested carrion to the young. The benefits of carcass manipulation and regurgitation have been the subject of a few small-s...

Parental care buffers against inbreeding depression in burying beetles.

When relatives mate, their inbred offspring often suffer a reduction in fitness-related traits known as "inbreeding depression." There is mounting evidence that inbreeding depression can be exacerbated by environmental stresses such as starvation, predation, parasitism, and competition. Parental care may play an important role as a buffer against inbreeding depression in the offspring by allevi...

Male burying beetles extend, not reduce, parental care duration when reproductive competition is high.

Male parents spend less time caring than females in many species with biparental care. The traditional explanation for this pattern is that males have lower confidence of parentage, so they desert earlier in favour of pursuing other mating opportunities. However, one recent alternative hypothesis is that prolonged male parental care might also evolve if staying to care actively improves paterni...

The effect of size and sex ratio experiences on reproductive competition in Nicrophorus vespilloides burying beetles in the wild

Male parents face a choice: should they invest more in caring for offspring or in attempting to mate with other females? The most profitable course depends on the intensity of competition for mates, which is likely to vary with the population sex ratio. However, the balance of pay-offs may vary among individual males depending on their competitive prowess or attractiveness. We tested the predic...

Parental care and adaptive brood sex ratio manipulation in birds.

Under many circumstances, it might be adaptive for parents to bias the investment in offspring in relation to sex. Recently developed molecular techniques that allow sex determination of newly hatched offspring have caused a surge in studies of avian sex allocation. Whether females bias the primary brood sex ratio in relation to factors such as environmental and parental quality is debated. Pro...
